DeWalt Power Tools DeWalt 24 Volt Battery and Charger Care and Charging Fact It has come to our attention that care and maintenance procedures for emergency service providers may be different than what is currently published and practiced in the field. Some existing procedures may be detrimental to the life of a rechargeable battery and must be changed in order to provide a longer life to your batteries. The following facts apply to the DeWalt 24 Volt Battery system: 1) All batteries have a life span. This life span is dependent on proper care and maintenance. 2) When a battery is placed in a charger or the charger is turned on-and-off with the battery in it, this is considered a charging cycle. A typical battery has between 800-900 recharging cycles. Keeping a battery in a 110v charger on a truck connected to the shoreline, unplugging and plugging the truck back in counts as a recharge cycle. 3) Having a fully charged battery in a charger, unplugging and plugging it back in has severe detrimental affects on the battery that will dramatically reduce the battery life. 4) Moisture and debris in the battery will reduce the battery life. A wet battery should not be recharged until dry. 5) Water on the charger may cause an electrical shock. Keep moisture away from all battery chargers. If you currently recharge your 24 Volt batteries on a 110v charger on a truck connected to a shore line and leave the batteries in the charger STOP Immediately. You must change your procedures to one of the following: 1) To provide a continuous-uninterrupted charge to a battery on a truck, connect a 12v charger to a hot lead directly to the truck battery system. The 12v DeWalt charger is protected to not remove power from the truck battery system if the on-board charger fails. 2) Connect a 110v charger into a station outlet and rotate batteries through the charger on a 2 week rotation. Leave batteries in the charger for a 24 hour period to take advantage of the ‘Tune-Up” mode that automatically conditions batteries. 3) If a 110v charger is kept on a truck, DO NOT leave the battery in the charger. Only use this charger as an “On-Scene” recharge system, not as a battery up-keep system. On the reverse side is a copy of a published document by DeWalt regarding additional Battery and Charger Facts. This information should help extend the life of your batteries. Like any piece of rescue equipment, proper care and maintenance will provide the rescuer the best tools to perform the task at hand. Contact ESI with any additional questions at 1-800-574-8228.
